The College Board has confirmed the 2027 AP arrangements, and the changes reach beyond the calendar: the form of the papers, the subjects on offer and several syllabuses all move at once.
Time and form
- Exams run strictly in the weeks of 3-7 May and 10-14 May 2027
- The morning/afternoon labels are replaced by Session 1 and Session 2 - in China (UTC+8) they start at 9:00 and 13:00, slightly later than before, and centres may open a paper up to an hour after the standard time
- The world is divided into seven exam time zones, each with its own paper - the old split between a US form and an international form disappears
Two new subjects, first examined in May 2027
- AP Business with Personal Finance - entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, accounting and management alongside saving, borrowing, budgeting and risk. Fully digital: 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes for 60%, four free-response questions in 90 minutes for 40%; only Units 1-4 are examined. Best suited to grades 11-12 with mature reading and case-analysis skills.
- AP Cybersecurity - an introduction matching a first-year university course: threats, vulnerabilities and defence in depth. Fully digital: 60 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes for 70%, one device-security-analysis free-response in 50 minutes for 30%.
- AP Networking follows in the 2027-28 year; its 2027 sitting is limited to pilot schools.
The syllabus changes that matter
- Statistics - the deepest rebuild: nine units consolidated to five, a fully digital exam, 42 multiple-choice questions with four options instead of five, four free-response questions at ten points each, and the prerequisite lowered to one year of algebra
- US Government and Politics - four documents join the required foundational set: the Emancipation Proclamation, Federalist No. 39, the Gettysburg Address, and core principles from Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations
- World languages - a Course Project plus a Personalized Project Reference due 30 April 2027, with the exam fully digital and speaking recorded in Bluebook
- Histories - European, US and World History standardise their papers: three required short-answer questions with no choice, and one required long essay on a broad prompt covering roughly half the course span
- Calculus and Physics - question-count adjustments rather than content change; each physics exam gains two multiple-choice questions and five minutes, and loses five minutes from the free-response section
- Environmental Science - no exam change, but rewordings across several topics including the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, food webs, adaptation and human population dynamics
For students planning 2027 entries the practical consequences are two: subject choice should factor in the new career-oriented options, and Statistics candidates should work from the new five-unit structure rather than older materials. How this fits an AP plan is covered on the AP programme page.
