SIFF, the Seattle International Film Festival.
Not a student competition - a professional festival that anyone may submit to. Which is exactly why it is worth knowing about: its short film awards are Academy Award qualifying, and a student short competes on the same terms as everyone else.

There is no student category, and that is the point.
SIFF publishes no age restriction and no student division. A film is judged as a film. For a student filmmaker that is both the opportunity and the difficulty.
Anyone may submit
The submission rules set out formats, running times and premiere status - not who made the film. A school student submits through the same platform, under the same terms, as a working director.
And the shorts are Academy Award qualifying
The organisers state that SIFF is an Academy Award qualifying festival in all three short categories - live action, animation and documentary. Very little else on this site carries that.
But the premiere rules will decide it
A film already released on video on demand, broadcast on US television or shown in a virtual cinema is ineligible in every category. Posting the film publicly before submitting can end the entry.
There is also a way in without a film
Two of the festival awards are judged entirely by young people - FutureWave by 13 to 18 year olds and Films4Families by 8 to 12 year olds.

What the festival is.
SIFF began in 1976 and is among the oldest festivals in the United States, and the largest and best attended in the north of the country. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural arts organisation, historically known for strong support of independent film and for audiences that function as a real test market.

The premiere rules
The four rules that decide eligibility.
This is where most submissions fall down, and the distinction between a festival screening and a commercial release is the one to understand.

Read the last two rows together. Playing festivals does not disqualify a film; releasing it does. For a student filmmaker the practical rule is simple: do not put the film up publicly before the festivals you want have finished with it.
The awards
Where the money and the qualification sit.
The short film awards are the ones a student entry can realistically reach, and they carry the Academy qualification.

The description of the Ibero-American award in the published material runs into text belonging to the documentary award and states the prize twice, so confirm its criteria directly with the festival.
How submission works
Four things the festival tells you plainly.
The submission process has a few rules that are easy to get wrong and cannot be undone afterwards.
You do not choose your programme
If a film is selected, the festival’s programming staff decide which programme it belongs in. Complete the submission form fully, because eligibility for each programme varies and they work from what you told them.
The screener version is the version
Once the link has been received there is no guarantee a later cut will be watched. Submit the film you want judged, not a work in progress.
Each film is a separate submission
Any number of films may be entered, but each needs its own secure link, its own form, its own fee and its own supporting material.
Confirmation is automatic
FilmFreeway sends a confirmation email once the submission is correctly filed, including the necessary information and fees.
For a student filmmaker
What a realistic route looks like.
Submitting to a professional festival is a different exercise from entering a school competition, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it.
Make a short, not a feature
Forty minutes or under, in narrative, animation or documentary. Around a hundred shorts are selected each year and every one is eligible for the cash award and the Academy qualification.
Protect the premiere status
Keep the film off public platforms until the festival route is finished. This single decision is worth more than anything else on this page.
Prepare the delivery materials
English subtitles for a non-English film, and a closed-caption file if selected. Both take longer than students expect and both are required.

FutureWave is judged by 13 to 18 year olds. Sitting on a festival jury is a real education in how films are actually assessed, and it needs no film of your own.

What students and families ask before submitting.
Is there a student category?
No. SIFF publishes no age restriction and no student division. A student film is submitted and judged on the same terms as any other.
What can I submit?
Features over 41 minutes and shorts of 40 minutes or under, in narrative, animation or experimental form, plus documentary features and documentary shorts on the same lengths.

Is there an entry fee?
Yes. It is waived only if 50% or more of the film was shot in Washington State, which requires approval by email and submission through FilmFreeway. The festival states that no other waivers or exceptions are given.
